Personal Success Story - Brett

In September 2001, I made the decision that it was time for me to get into shape. I had reached  381 lbs and about to move into a 62 inch waist. I had put on most of my weight while I launched my new business venture over the past 10 years. The pressures of that caused me to develop very poor eating habits and be limited to less than 30 minutes physical activity per week. 

A good friend of mine had joined the gym months earlier and convinced me to give it a whirl. I had been a member of Sports Club in the past, but  didn't stick with it.I knew that I needed help with working out safely and  reaching my goals. 

I started my first training session with the personal training team at Parkview on September 21st, 2001. I thought I was going to collapse; every muscle in my body ached for almost a week! Ryan was a great motivator and gave me very valuable advice; he said "you must do both weights and cardio", but he said stressed that cardio was the key to successful weight loss. For the first 3 months I was at the gym 7 days a week doing cardio each day for a minimum of 30 minutes, as well as 3 one-hour sessions with a trainer doing weights. Now I work out with Ryan twice a week and on my own for another 3 times a week, with a minimum of 60 minutes cardio each of the 5 days. 

In addition to my exercise program, Ryan stressed the importance of eating the RIGHT foods, more protein (chicken breast, egg whites, etc...) less carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, etc...) portion control, limiting alcohol consumption (less than 2 glasses red wine per week). Exercise and Nutrition is the only healthy combination that will empower you to lose weight, and keep the weight off! Wow! I sound like a reformed smoker!!!!! 

To date, I have lost 97 lbs, and 14 inches on my waist. I am still a few months away from reaching my target, of 250 lbs and a 44-inch waist but I know I will get there. I have to continue to challenge myself with maximum effort; maximum intensity and maximum commitment. To do something like this is a huge commitment of both time and effort but to me it has definitely been worth it. At the end of the day quality of life is what counts and while I am still young and it wasn't affecting me too much it was only a matter of time.
